What is it with popping bubble wrap?

Back in the late 90's, little flash-sheets of "virtual bubble wrap" started popping (ahem) up all over the internet.

But this is just weird. Man, those Japanese make anything and everything. Which, admittedly, is kinda why I want to go visit. Me likey the gadgets.
