what a difference a Day makes.

When Lance and I went to hear Ant at the Rrazz room, we saw fliers for Spencer Day. RMJ and I remember Spencer not only from his big start headlining at the Plush Room as the smoldering 20-something crooner and "The New Harry Connick, Jr." but we also remember him from way back when at the Lush Lounge. Back when Polk was Polk and the Lush was The Lush. (Sigh.)

Robert Michael Joseph, Spencer Day and Wilson Hardcastle

Lance suggested we get tickets together and he pulled together a good group for last Friday: Me & Lance (Gregg was taking finals), David Britt, Jeff & Bill, and RMJ and his new date Isaac.

Spencer Day at the Rrazz Room

I really cannot convey what a good show he put on. It was Spencer at the piano and microphone, with a drummer, bassist, and guitarist/cellist. The musical talent on that stage was beyond stellar. The show was warm, engaging, moving, and delightful. And sitting in the front row before Spencer and his guitarist/cellist Yair, the show was also beautiful to look at.

Wilson Hardcastle and Yair Evnine

By the end of the night, we were all big Yair fans. (Spencer who?)

Yair Evnine and fans 2

We all enjoyed the show immensely and I got to see some old friends in the crowd as well. Shouts to Brad Brewster (happy birthday) and his partner John, Jason Perez, and Brett.

Really a stellar show, and as RoMo put it, an unbelievable entertainment value. If you ever get the chance to go to one of his shows, do.

We were left wondering what to do with the rest of the night. Lance couldn't do much as his boyfriend was waiting at home with a bottle of vodka and the sense of relief that comes with finishing the last final exam of the year. And the rest of us needed to stay within walking distance of public transit be it MUNI or BART.

Just next door a barker pulled us towards a new "dueling piano" basement bar. We were thinking Martuni's anyway, and we were happy to dive down. Cheesy/tourist straights be damned. Actually, the cheesier the crowd the more fun I thought we'd have. The boyish door guy started to demand IDs (the crowd was very early 20s). The barker just laughed. "Dude, these guys are like in their 40s." Which was true enough. Half of us laughed. Half of us didn't. Which made the other half laugh harder.

Just sayin'.

The dueling piano bar whose name I never knew was totally cheesy and lots of fun. No cover, but they make that up in the drink prices. At least they take plastic. The pianists also play the auction bidding game for requests, and just as often start a bidding war not to play something.

dueling piano bar

You know, I don't think I have seen Lance or Bill drunk more than once before. OMG, hilarious. Several single ladies befriended us, and were disappointed to find that half of us had husbands, and the rest of us were equally unavailable.

Lance Wills, David O'Rourke and revelrer . Hottie picks up David Britt

Bill O'Rourke and Louise

Louise, our new best friend, caught Jeff and I ogling these two:

hot "dudes"

Dude on the left thought we were talking about his chest hair, as it was all stubble. He was pretty drunk and boastful of his body (worth boasting admittedly). He bragged that he was "100% Italian" and had plenty of hair, he just "had a skin condition he had to shave to show his doctor." Yeah, because that sounds sexier than just shaving your chest to show off your pecs.

The dude on the left was solid and sexy, and Louise thought he looked like a young Bruce Springstein. And that line worked on the boy and she worked him with it as best she could. You GO Louise.

Louise talks up the hottie who looks like a young Bruce Springstein

Both guys were hot in a lost-but-prowling, early-20s way. Aw.

We stayed and drank and danced and had a great time. I was taking it pretty easy, limiting myself to just a couple of Jacks (which doesn't get me drunk, just aggressively flirty).

The other boys though? Wow.

I have never seen Lance dance outside of Sundance. This was awesome.

Lance dances 1 . Lance dances 2

Lance dances 3 . Lance dances 4

Britt was dancing too. And Bill. Such a mess. Loved it. I had to take a clip.

I'm just sayin'.

October surprise!

We love the Deb, but when she moved to Sausalito, we saw her less and less. And then she had Roman, which dropped her free time to zero. As much as we try to get together, our quality times are few and far between. We—Deb, Perpetua, Katia, and I- do try to get together every October to celebrate Deb's and Katia's birthdays.

For the "old gang," we had not seen Deb together, and in some cases even each other, in four years or more. It was high time for a reunion. On the pretense of our annual October gathering, I planned drinks and dinner with Deb and Kate Varni (now Leake) . It was an almost Herculean effort to secure Deb at a time and place after work and before Roman's bedtime, and even then we had to reduce the plan from dinner to a promise it was "just for a quick drink to see each other and wish happy birthdays. Lance and Greg generously offered to host at their home, and Beth even more generously offered Sati as a playdate and herself as partygoer/resident mom to make the event kid-friendly.

The evening could not have been a grander success. Deb was thoroughly surprised, and everyone had a wonderful time. Deb brought both her son and her father (whom I had not seen, I believe, since the Christening), and out of the woodwork came Mike Grace, James Hass, Perpetua, Lace and Greg, Kate Varnie Leake and her husband Joe, Paul Day, and David Britt— who also brought his parents. With Beth, Upstairs Greg and Sati, it was a multi-generational surprise party and everyone had a ball.

Sati had been preparing for the "surprise for Roman" all day, and ad nearly twice his age was his mature host and date for the night. Sati was prepared in a party dress, and Roman appear in his spooky ghost pajamas and fireman boots (at last request, he wants to be a fireman for Halloween). The kids were adorable and got along great together (which is always something I worry about--I didn't always take to the strange kids my parents were want to set me up with).

Without fear for bedtimes or parental responsibility (that is to say responsibility for and/or of Deb's dad), the agreement to stay just for a little while was easily relaxed into a long evening of catching up, cocktails, cooking, cake, and quality time.

Deb and Roman blow out the candle

ENORMOUS thanks to Beth and Upstairs Greg who spent the majority of the evening looking over Roman and Sati's playtime, enabling the grown-ups to have their own.

Oh dear God. I am a grown-up in this scenario.

Who wants cake?
James wants cake. Sati has some.

James wants cake. (Sati has cake.)

Speaking of James, he is not so much a grown-up in this scenario. Lance and Roman were so freaking adorable together. (Roman is a crazy cute kid on his own and adds visual value to anyone nearby.) We tried to get some cute shots of Roman and Lance together, but the timing always seemed to be off to get them both smiling and looking at the camera at the same time. The best shots those, are those with James lurking in the background:

Roman and Lance (who's that behind them!)

Roman and Lance (who's that behind them!) 2

Still, that kid is adorable.

It meant a lot to me to be able to pull this off for Deb. She such a wonderful person and friend and we just never see her any more. The rest of the guests rounded out a quality group too and every moment was a pleasure.

Update:
I got the best thank-you note from Deb. I debated posting it here, but it warmed me so I thought I would share. I love that I could do this for her.
Thank you so very much for the wonderful birthday party last night. You literally had me speechless. I was completely not expecting to see all those wonderful familiar faces, and I couldn’t have thought of a better gift. You are so wonderful, so thoughtful, so amazing. I am so lucky to have you in my life. I hope that someday I am lucky enough to find a man like you – who happens to be straight – because I’d marry your cuteness in a heartbeat.

My dad paid you perhaps the biggest compliment this morning as we were recapping last night. As you know, my dad loves Roman beyond belief, and he said, “Wilson is such a great man, and he’s such a good role model for Roman. You really ought to have Wilson spend an afternoon with Roman at least once or twice a month so Roman can learn what a real man is like”. He doesn’t even say this about my brothers!

I think that pretty much sums up how the family loves you!

Thank you.

Hit me.

Some time over the weekend the blog passed 50 thousand hits. That's pretty crazy for this silly little thing. I do love doing it though. I need a creative writing outlet, and it's nice to have a forum for my rambling that people can ignore if they like rather than my venting indiscriminately around town.

But hey, 50 thousand hits! At least some of y'all are clearly entertained.

Every now and again I check the blog stats. Part of StatCounter's free services is a log of search terms that lead people to the blog. before the fourth of July weekend I was dismayed to see several visitors had used the string "David Britt murder." DB is a good friend of mine and I had to check to make sure he was okay. It turns out there is an oold case in Tennessee about a murder named David Britt and he got out or was killed or something. It was in the news somewhere, and some interested folks came looking here for information (I talk about Nashville, Tennessee, and David Britt, just not the one they were looking for.)

There have been some other colorful search terms in the log. Like this one:

query terms

Who knew someone would look to me for "vagina waxing" salons in Tucson? (And at least technically speaking, I hope it's not actually the vadge that's getting the wax, just the forest leading to the village.)

And just the other day, there was this. You can guess what caught my eye, but I have no idea what page it would bring up.

However you got here, welcome.

And if I ever find myself in a situation involving Robert Redford and a dildo, I'll be sure to blog about it.

Happy Fourth

I was feeling pretty independent despite the Bush administration and celebrated like most Americans on a staycation by cooking meat out of doors.

Lance & (Gay) Greg and Beth & (Metro) Greg opened their compound to friends and family and we all had a grand old time. I enjoyed new and old friends, and had some unexpected quality time with Glenn whom I had met only the night before. And a well-earned shout out to Glenn. Blasts from the past Michael Driver and Mike Grace were about, and it seemed like (really) old times.

It comes as no surprise to Michael that he is the gayest guy I know so I have no compunctions in posting that here. After all, he used to go by Saltina, because he is Queen of the Crackers. I mention this just for blog's sake as I wanted to mention all the tiny yippy dogs people brought to the party. Dogs that could not have been more faggy. Michael named his fluffy little dog, and I am not making this up, Matt Damon.

I'm just sayin'.

Pleasures of the Day:

Mr. and Mrs. Britt

David Britt's parents

Although I will say that with the pending wedding of her remaining single and hetero son, Mrs., Britt was a bit morose, and after several tales of parental coldness, emotional abuse, and suicide, many of us felt like putting our heads in the oven. Thank God for the preponderance of booze and grilled meats.

It's July in SF- so cold you can see your breath 2

Michael (with whom I shared a plane ride back from Nashville returning from Swan Ball) remarked with disbelief, or perhaps just frustration, that it was the fourth of JULY, and you could see your breath in the cold air.

Fireworks, for me at least, came later.

However, equally foggy.

How did we miss this?!

Shilpa just got back from a meeting and was telling someone about the trip to the corn maze.

"Who was there?"
"It was me, Wilson, Paul Day, Fred, and Barney..."
"And I hope Betty and Wilma."
"What?"

How did we not think to get a picture of "Fred and Barney"? There are already enough folks calling me Wilma, but that would have been awesome.

We need to get David Britt out more so we can have Betty too.

Codependence Day

Well, the flickr export worked before my iPhoto went all cablooey, so at least I still have the photos from July 4th at Lance's faboo new digs. I didn't take that many photos, and unfortunately none of them really showcase the swankiness of Lance's new house and deck and all of that.

They do, however, showcase some seriously hot lesbians. Charming, interesting, funny, and crazy with the beautiful. Shout out and love to my new girlfriend Toni and her luscious precious Jennifer--the (butter) fly to GayGreg's fruit.

Saturday of Beaches and Boots

As BR549 once sang, it was one long Saturday night. Saturday was chock-full of fun, and as such completely exhausting.

Dr. May rallied the troops to make the most of the sunshine and warm weather by taking a roadtrip North through Olema to one of the many beaches in the Point Reyes National Seashore.

Friday night ended unexpectedly early as the two-for-one's at Bandlands happy hour left me, shall we say, "peaking" a bit early. Thank God I went to bed early on Friday as Barney rallied us to get a move on at 9:00 Saturday morning. I picked up Shilpa, Lance (and George), and then Barney before meeting up with David Britt in Marin and caravan-ing up the coast together-- Shilpa, Barney and I in Linda and Lance & George with David in his new (and yet another) Miata Mazda MX5.

There was a bit of lane confusion in San Anselmo and we found ourselves making a series of repetitive turns around a single intersection, and were suprosed to be stopped at a light behind this atrocity:

An enormous earth-destroying Ford SUV in "liberal" Marin County with the bumper stickers: "[Peace Symbol]: Footprint of the American Chicken" and "ACLU [with the C replaced by a hammer and sickle]: Enemy of the State." As they are so proud of these opinions as to plaster them to their SUV, I feel no need to redact the license plate.

I was so appalled that I felt the need to take a picture. The car next to us clearly agreed with our dismay, and thought that it was hilarious that we took a photo.

--- My brief rant on this: ---

The ACLU is an organization whose sole purpose is to defend the Bill of Rights and the Constitution of the United States of America. How on earth can this be the enemy of the state—it is seeking to preserve the rights and ideals of a state against those who might attack it, even those within its government. As an organization protecting the constitution, it is necessarily patriotic. How conservative "patriots" can denigrate the ACLU without dissonance is beyond me.

And as for the other sticker, I find equating peace with weakness also ironic. War and violence are always easier than peace and resolution. Striving for peace has always required more courage than a rush to war. For me, the painful irony/cognitive dissonance in this stance is that it is often voiced by conservative/evangelical Christians. Rallying for war in the name of the Prince of Peace is not the sign of a sound mind, nor soul.

--- End of rant. ---

It was, actually, a perfect day for a drive. It was just beautiful weather with sunny skies and moderate temps.

(That's David ahead of us.)

We stopped in Olema where Sir Francis Drake finally ends and picked up some sandwiches and sodas. Barney generously treated the chauffeur to lunch and had brought several bottles of a New Zealand white for the caravan.

We finally made our way to Limatour, which required a small walk (maybe 200 yards) to the beach.

Now, originally the group thought we were headed to Tomales Bay and the Oyster farms and restaurants there, so arriving at a wide expanse of sand was a bit unexpected. Barney, instigator and planner, was the only one who knew where we were going and so was the most appropriately attired. In dress sandals and a skirt, Shilpa was much more dressed for cute than casual, and was justifiably concerned about sitting lounging in the sand. (Sand having a way of getting into nooks and [ahem] crannies.)

And of course, being me, I was prepared for such a contingency and was able to pull out beach blankets, towels, and extra waters from the trunk, as well as a sun hat for Shilpa.

It was a lovely day for relaxing on the sand and enjoying the surf:

(For some reason I just really liked this image.)

An exiled George tied to a post.

In addition to the other items I keep in the trunk "just in case," I had a kite, which was much, much enjoyed (even if it did get that song stuck in my head for the better part of an hour).

Actually, it was just Lance and I who got into the kite flying. The others just raised their glasses and mocked from a distance. But we finally got it airborne.

And once it caught the coastal currents, it really soared:

(This is a detail- in the original photo the kite is a tiny speck.)

We were cheered on by an older lesbian couple a few dunes away. Notice how few people are on the beach. In this vast openess, while trying to recover from a downdraft, Lance managed to run over and knock down this woman who had come to compliment the kite flying effort. This was hilarious, and this photo was taken moments after they untangled themselves up off the sand.

Ultimately, we could see the marine layer making its way south and inland towards us. After about an hour of "who can best estimate the time of fogfall" the temperature dropped about 20 degrees and we broke camp. I had put a limit on the day, asking to be back in the City by 4:30 for another event. We packed up around 3:30 and I knew we would be late. Tonight was the spring Rodeo Private Shopping Night. The pre-party, country kareoke at the Mint, started at 4:00. The bus was scheduled to leave at 8:00 sharp.

It was a long day in the sun, and a terribly long ride back to SF. And as the driver, I was the only one who didn't nap along the way.

After dropping everyone off at their respective abodes around 6ish, I managed a few minutes to chill and to take a 15-minute disco nap before showering, making the bus playlists (I had been asked to provide music for the ride), and rushing over to Duboce and Market to find parking.

The disco nap was essential. I was completely knackered from the day. I would have certainly crashed without a nap, but if I slept any longer than 20 minutes I would never have gotten up at all. Having touched the dreamspace, I felt refreshed, and as darkness fell in the interim, it felt like I was waking to another day. It felt as if that morning felt were a week ago.

I made it to the Mint around 7:30 and met up with the GSGRA Chapter President Doug and Shopping Night coordinator Scott (whose public name is Skot Land). Last time there were fairly few participants. This time Skot managed to pre-sell over 40 seats. When I arrived, they had just been informed by the bus company that the big bus had broken down and the company would be sending two small buses instead--that was much less fun than one large party barge, but it worked out all right. The entire experience, while not as surreal with the previous trip, was much much fun.

And inappropriate touching is always fun on a party bus.

This trip I tried to curb my spending--I really don't need any more western wear, and I'm already Imelda with the boots. But they were offering deals and everything at a 25% discount. The last two times I spent more money that I cared to on pair of stingray boots, but I have enjoyed them so much I have never regretted the purchases (you'll never regret spending a little more for good quality). And if I were ever to buy a pair of unusual and expensive boots (an "exotic"), I had best do so during such a sale.

Some of the "exotics."

Last fall, there was a rainbow of options and during the bus ride I thought, "maybe I'll get a brightly colored pair this time." It's amazing how beer facilitates commerce. Here's a pic from the fall trip:

The colors were much more limited this time down, but I tend to favor green in my wardrobe and started considering the lime-sherbert pair. Someone chuckled and said, "But you'll never find anything to wear with those."

Oh, please.

Like I don't have two pair of pants and two shirts in my closet that are basically this color. I think I responded with something gay like, "Don't underestimate my ability to accesorize."

Sure enough, only two racks over was a shirt exactly that color. I held them up together and someone snaped my picture. Garnering attention, Doug rushed over and provided me with a matching, rhinestone-studded belt.

You can imagine the entire ensemble:

Alas, I did not spent the $300-plus on the green ostrich boots. (How often has anyone heard that sentence?)

I did, however, get a couple of bold shirts (and one a similar bold green) and some short-sleeved country shirts for dancing.

And a pair of boots.

With the deal they gave me, and my great experience with my previously possibly exhorbitant purchases, I decided it was a wise, wise thing to purchase the pair of black and white lizard skins. VERY snazzy. And I they will look awesome at the formal events or El Deora shows (when they return from their European tour).

Skot, a handsome but very tiny fellow, made off with the most remarkable purchase: a belt buckle the size of his face:

He wore it out to Sunday dancing to much attention.

Skot: "It's five and a half by seven inches. I measured it."
Me, gratutitously: "Oh... the belt buckle."
Davey: "That's not seven inches."
Skot: "It is. I measured it with a tape measure."
Davey: [Reaches in and measures the width by stretching his thumb to pinky finger. He pulls back, looks the spread fingers, and ponders.] "Wow. I'm feeling much better about myself now."
Me: "But the buckle doesn't have to be measured from its bottom edge to be that big."
