While Garfield does not even approach the evil Family Circus for levels of unfunny, it certainly does lack the punch of say Pearls Before Swine.

But this, THIS, is BRILLIANCE. Garfield, as a strip, may suffer from overmuch-- the joke is illustrated, and texted, and reiterated- and is thus so oversold that it fails to be really funny or interesting. But remove all of Garfield's thought bubbles, and the strip becomes at times painfully funny and even painfully pathetic (for Jon). Often fascinatingly surreal. It is now a strip about a funny cartoon cat and the lonely man who talks to him.


These examples are great. I wish for more.
