Thinking about this led me to find the original trailer on YouTube. I remember the movie being pretty suspenseful and fairly scary, in that really well-told-scary-story-by-the-campfire sort of way.
I didn't notice they made another remake (wasn't there one in the 80s too?). This one looks more horror movie than suspense. As I recall in the first one the villain never appeared until the very end. However the production values are clearly much more posh.
