let's see Ricky down at the club

As the web abounded with celebrations of Lucille Ball's 100th birthday this weekend, let's also take a moment for the contribution of her Cuban-born husband and his latin song stylings which were the rage in the NYC dinner club scene at the time. This month, the San Francisco Public Library is featuring a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian: American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music, which "presents the musical contributions of U.S. Latinos from the 1940s to the present, exploring the social history and individual creativity that produced stars like Tito Puente, Ritchie Valens, Celia Cruz, Carlos Santana and Selena."
