I've had a 500 GB Lacie d2 external drive working as a network/AirDisk file server for about a year. Maybe less. I got it with an Apple Store gift certificate sometime after my birthday in 2007.
I store all my videos and media there, as well as extra photos and a laptop backup.
It just crashed. And it looks like it won't mount again. It is, in theory, still under warranty, but it's not like I can lay hands on the receipt.
And the LaCie site is clear that their warranty has nothing to do with data recovery. And if I send it in for warranty repair, I can kiss my files goodbye. I bought this as a backup drive, which apparently needed its own backup.
I am afraid it's going to cost me a fortune just to retrieve the data on this thing. How much is it worth it? The only irreplaceable items are all the photos and home movies and clips I've taken over the past couple of years (migrated to the backup to make room on on the laptop).
I once packed up ALL of my family's and my entire lifetime of photo albums, scrapbooks, and journals and shipped them to myself, only to have them lost by UPS. I still get physically ill thinking about that loss. (Keep in mind, I am an archivist, and a romantic.)
This just makes me sick.
And I won't be buying or recommending LaCie products ever again, for professional or personal use.
