Information Kareoke

The very cool Tricia Roush coordinated an information professionals happy hour at the orbit Room last night. I got there only as it was ending, but I got to catch up a bit with Carole-with-an-e who just landed a sweet job with Bain. It was also nice to chat with Tricia, whom I had met at a "copyright in the digital age" workshop last year.

I can't tell if I am deflated or motivated from the event as I see how far I have fallen off of my library science career track by working where I am now. I would much rather be in an information research environment if I cannot be in a television/film archving/reference environment. And the more I work here, the more time passes without direct experience in the research/reference field. Ugh. It's time to refocus my energies towards the career goals and stop "just working."

Next door and immediately following the information professional's happy hour was the Country Kareoke night hosted by The Best Buck in the Bay (Bay Area gay Rodeo) at The Mint.

I've learned a tricky thing about kareoke nights. Once you're drunk enough to put your name in for shaming yourself with song, it's too late to be in the queue and your name won't come up before the bar closes or you want to go home. I'll have to finesse that next time.

Anyone who knows me knows I can't carry a tune in the bucket, but with the country company I was keeping last night, any grading of my performance would have been on a curve.

While perusing the songbooks lastt night, I also noticed how many country songs are basically talking, not singing, songs. For example, The Devil Went Down to Georgia, and a lot of Johnny Cash. The solace songs for the kareoke-challenged.
