haters choke on their own tactics

This has been seriously bugging me: the hypocrisy and sanctimony of those who would deny me equal protection under the law.

We, gays, lesbians, and other disenfranchised citizens have been seeking the proper recognition of equality under the law free from religious persecution. Organized religions have taken an unprecedented and open effort to influence politics and the law to specifically exclude gays and lesbians from equal rights and protections (on moral grounds which do not even stand up to strict scrutiny under their own doctrines).

Now the equal rights and civil rights movement is taking the battle and taking these religious organizations to task for their blatant disregard for the separation of church and state and their civil oppression and abuse of a minority citizenry.

And the churches are crying foul! Why are you picketing us! You can't do that! We're a church!

Bullshit. Once you decided to turn your congregation into a political action committee, you lost that shield. You came into our yard and slandered us, beat us, and took away our rights. You can run back to your so called hallowed ground now and call "base!" Fight for your church law however you want, but others' religious laws have no place in a civil constitution or book of code.

And some businesses/business leaders/business owners are no better. Those who donated to the "Yes on 8" campaign are being noted, and called out, and boycotted.

Unfair! they cry.

Unfair? The Yes on 8 campain openly threateded donors to the No on 8 campaign. Now that the repeal Prop 8 movement is idenfying anti-gay donors for finacial boycott, the bigots are complaining.

Boo hoo. You're losing money. You took away my rights.

Some are claiming that yes, they sent money to "protect marriage" and devoutly support "traditional marriage" but don't hate the gays. They claim that they love the gays! Some have even pointed to their record of donating to pride events.

That doesn't count. What this new massive movement is demonstrating is that ignorance and hypocrisy will no longer fly. You can't be "pro-gay" and actively pursue to deny LGBT citizens equality under the law.

Dan Savage articulated the point on the Colbert Report: Colbert asked why he cannot be pro-gay and still advocate against gay marriage. One cannot be supportive of gays and lesbians and still advocate for their disenfranchisement under the law.

And while we're at it, enough of this "traditional" marriage bullshit. Under American "traditional" marriage, the president elect's parents' marriage was illegal in 16 states when they were married. Gay marriage foes need to let go of the fantasy of "traditional" marriage already. They should own up to theirbigotry and defend it as such, or recognize it as such and let it go. That's their own internal baggage to deal with. But laws should not be enacted so people can avoid their own cognitive dissonance.

Hmm...

"Hey, I have a FRIEND who is black! And I once bought girl scout cookies from a cute little colored girl. Oh, but that doesn't mean I want them moving into my neighborhood. I'm just protecting what this neighborhood has traditionally looked like."
