get in line, SF is a ride

I keep coming back to the idea that it may be time for me to move back to Nashville.  With Dad's health as it is and Mom home alone while he is under care at Blakeford, I feel the need to be home more than ever.  I am back about every other month as it is, and I do have a deep, rich family life there as well as a ridiculously good social life for someone who lives over two thousand miles away.  The long stay over Christmas made me think about it more and more.  I could care for and be with my family, enjoy my friends and the local creative scene, could drop into a number of jobs fairly easily, and could handily  afford a cool place.

However.

I got an e-mail on Monday from Fitz in Nashville who will be out here with a friend or two this weekend and asked what was going and if we could hang out.  They've never been to SF and really want to "do" the Castro.  Once I finished my reply of "what was going on this week," I realized this is why I live in San Francisco.  Those of us who are out and about are constantly drinking from SF's fountain of adventure.  Or more poetically, we tend to suckle our life's milk from her very breast.  Or other appendages depending on your take.

So, in the recurring theme of What's Going On This Week, here's what my week has to offer for Fitz and his fellow conference attendees:

Thursday:  I'm part of the costumed/country/bear VIP people invited to the opening screening of Country Strong on Thursday night, to which I think I can get still you a free ticket if you'd like. It's the 7:00 or 8:00 show so it should be over 9:00 or 10:00 and I could still collect you or meet you for some Castro carousing afterward.

Friday:  I have a birthday drinks thing penciled in for a friend but he hasn't really decided what he wants to do yet.  I expect he'll have cocktails at Blackbird (Church and Market, proper cocktail bar, mixed crowd), which we could drop in on then have a complete Castro Crawl for the rest of the night.   Alternatively, I'd be happy to host a cocktail thing at my place before a bar tour, or put out the call for an early "Meet and Greet Fitz" social at one of the Castro happy hour spots and get you started on those 2-4-1s right quick with a pre-screened group of fun people, followed by dinner in the hood, and more drinking.  I am an enabler.

Also not to be missed is Ejector's Ben Holder spinning at the Edge during their happy hour DJ Fridays. Depending on when you are free from work obligations we can meet there to start happy hour then tour, dine, tour.

Actually, I recommend happy hour, dinner, then Nasty: "A Filthy Fundraiser for the AIDS Emergency Fund," which has now become a monthly event.  I love Nasty but it doesn't really get started until around 11:00/11:30.  And you really should visit the Powerhouse or South of Market while you are in town.  Nasty is like a proper cocktail party vibe in a leather/frisky environment.  And you are just the type everyone will want to molest (handsome, fit, and furry).  "Gear" is far from necessary, but attire should tend toward the black, tight fitting, or fetish (which covers a lot—"fetish" is pretty much "whatever floats your boat."  I've seen people look ridiculously sexy rocking a three piece suit.  I've come straight from a black-tie event more than once and fit in.  T-shirts and jeans are typical attire.).

Saturday:  My friends are having a launch party for their third CD.  They (77 El Deora) are sort of Urban Country, or what Maurice call's "Oblique Americana."  I am a ridiculous fan of these guys (and I got half of them to play my big country 40th party out here).  Their launch party is at the Café Du Nord, which is a very cool club and Castro-adjacent.  We could take in part of their show during Honky Tonk Showdown 6 and then continue on to a Castro Crawl.  Or start with a Castro Crawl and hit Du Nord later as the Honky Tonk Showdown is advertised as door@8, music@9 and 77 as the third band on stage.  I'll forward the Facebook Event thing for that.  I've been meaning to pick up my advance ticket but have not done so yet.  We could totally do Castro/Du Nord/back to Castro if that's of interest.  But the honky tonk crowd, while not gay, tends to be a fun bunch of City Folk.

Sunday:  I usually do the Sundance Saloon country/western dance thing Sunday nights, which is a sight to see if you are interested.  However, after dancing New Year's Eve my ankle has the structural integrity of Jell-O and I may need to bail for a while.  Sunday is also the day we sometimes have Brunk, which would be fun to take you to (just brunch with my rowdy, inappropriate friends). Weather permitting, Sunday afternoon crawls in the Castro are always nice.

Sunday is also my friend's new weekly show at the Café, a club I tend to hate (too young and Bridge & Tunnel for my tastes) but I loves my Pollo so I need to go some time.  It's in the Castro and show starts around 9:30, with  2-4-1s 8:30 to 11:00.

Just let me know your schedule and your tastes and I'll set something up.

Welcome to SF!
