If there had been widespread commercial air travel in 1944, he might have been more specific and written that "Hell is other airline passengers during peak travel times such as the holiday season." The sheer incompetence, inefficiency and obliviousness of the occasional air traveler, or the "rural grandparents off to see the kids and have all of the urban/travel sophistication of a brain damaged badger" significantly raised my personal threat level this year past Orange and into "Bitch Slap." Brother Mac prescribed as many Bloody Marys as flight time would allow. Ironically, I don't usually order that many drinks on planes as I hate to treat flight attendants like their are wait staff. They're not. (But there are times they just need to keep 'em comin'.)
In her usual manner (in her SF blog Tourist Trapped), Beth Spotswood feels my pain in her post-holiday list of Top 10 Rules for Air Travel. And I'm adding that if you're not over six feet tall, get over your Napoleonic complexes and don't fight for an exit row seat. Let people with long legs use the leg room.
