I have always HATED gerrymandering-- the contortionist drawing of congressional boundaries to keep those drawing the lines in power, almost always to expressly discriminate and disenfranchise a minority population. This practice is almost universal across the United States and blithely expected, even though it is blatantly contrary to the ideals of the Constitution and the basic principals of congressional representation. It is an ugly loophole never to be closed because while it is against the best interests of the voters, it is in the best interests of the elected.
Conservative commentator Andrew Sullivan reports in his blog on a proposal to use an impartial computer to redistrict congressional boundaries using census data and an algorithm devised using a set of debated and ranked criteria. The over-riding guiding principles of the algorithm would be geographical contiguity, equality in population, and compactness.Oh perchance to dream--one easy, obvious step to make politics and our government less sleazy, corrupt, partial, and gratutiously partisan.
