For what's going on with the attempted Mid-Market revitalization plan by the City, the payroll tax breaks being offered to Twitter to move into the large vacant building at 9th & Market, and the one guy (Randy Shaw) who made his publically-funded fortune by turning the Tenderloin into the highest concentration of drug addicts and 5150 crazies (in the name of social justice), the Civic Center Blog has a nice bit of coverage and commentary.
It seems that Mr. Shaw stood up as Emperor of the Tenderloin who also successfully made sure there was no redevelopment or gentrification pontificated for his allotted two minutes, only to be eviscerated by a Tenderloin resident half an hour later. It turns out that Mr. Shaw makes all of his money from government subsidies, and decries that there are no investments in the neighborhood, while he has been personally responsible from blocking or discouraging all investment in the neighborhood. The local blogs are kind of all over it, and there is some satisfaction brewing in that someone finally called his shit out at a Board of Supervisors Budget and Finance sub-committee meeting.
