OMFG. 52 meetings. FIFTY-TWO freaking community and design meetings to renovate Dolores Park. Finally, everyone down to the "I've lived in the Mission for a month and am moving back to NYC on Tuesday" has got to touch this project and put in their two cents. A million bucks has been spent and everyone's on board now. But the now Arts Commission thinks that the roof to the one of the new bathrooms is "too boxy." So the whole thing is pushed back for months, which could cause a catastrophic cascade effect on the implementation schedule and contracts.
Mission Local has the story.
Because the roof on one of the bathrooms, a green roof with flowing plants, is "too boxy" looking. They also want more natural light, despite the designers' concern—based on their experience—of vandalism related to having them. Because what Dolores Park needs is more bathroom vandalism options. Now the firm has to redesign and resubmit in a month. And get all the new designs run by the NIMBY madness again. AND the design changes then have to go back through the Historical Impact Review too. Is it any wonder why projects like this cost so much in this City?
At this point, all of us users in the part would be ecstatic would bathrooms that were, clean, secure, and function. We can deal with the slightly "boxy" roof line under the bougainvillea branches.
The more I read about it, the more I think the Arts Commission Civic Design Review Committee just needs to suck it. By the time they're done with it, Dolores Park will cost $5 million and look like a camel.
