I called my parents last night, just for the usual "Hi, how are you? Love you. Just checking in." sort of call.Mom answered. And in surprisingly good spirits, considering.
They were in the basement with the cell phone, cordless phone, flashlights and emergency radio.
There were some serious storms through the south last night, and tornadoes across Tennessee.
And in their neighborhood.
There's the "Tornado Watch" coverage, which means conditions are perfect for twisters and we're on the lookout. And then there is "Tornado Warning" coverage, which means we've spotted tornadoes. They're here. They're seriously fucking people up. We're tracking them on radar and in the field, so pay attention.
Last night they were listening to the latter. Well, Mom was. She's got like three emergency weather band radios stationed throughout the house. Dad was reading the paper.
The radio and television stations broke in to exclaim, "If you live in [my parents' neighborhood], get to your safe place NOW!"
From this morning's SFGate wire story on the storm: "Twenty-six people were killed in Tennessee, 13 killed in Arkansas, seven killed in Kentucky and four killed in Alabama."
