I wanted to pass along a web-site called Heifer.org in case you are thinking of donating funds this holiday season instead of gift giving. It’s a non-profit that allows you to purchase animals-- pigs, chickens, cows etc. or help families establish farms in impoverished countries so they can feed their families and grow their crops.

My mother has been doing this since I was little. Georgi and I have always “given” a gift basket of baby chicks to a family and my mom always bought a cow in my father’s name. Now it’s all on-line! In case you’re scrambling around trying to find last minute gifts, this is a neat idea. You can give a whole animal (pigs only $120!) or give a partial $ amount and other donors make up the difference.
