Pitfalls of Christmas shopping for video games

It seems that retro is still metro, and with the new video game consoles being so ludicrously expensive some recommend giving nostalgic game systems.

From the San Francisco Chronicle:

The one rule I'd follow when choosing an older game system is to go back at least three generations. Right now, the GameCube is no more nostalgic than a 1993 Ford Escort, while playing a Sega Genesis is like motoring around town in a Dodge Charger (which would be about 50 times more cool than an Escort even if the Dukes of Hazzard never existed).
As a guy with a ColecoVision, with the Atari 2600 expansion unit, stored under my television right this very minute, I can attest to warm fuzzies/remembered frustration of a Gorilla throwing barrels.

But all of a sudden I wonder, why was the ape named Donkey?
