Flashdance!

This is the coolest flash mob ever.

From today's Evening Standard (London):

4,000 flash mob dancers startle commuters at Victoria
By Tim Stewart
More than 4,000 clubbers danced through the rush hour at Victoria station in Britain's biggest flash mob stunt.

Revellers responded to e-bulletins urging them to "dance like you've never danced before" at 6.53pm. There were knowing looks and giggles among the casually dressed crowd that gathered from 6.30pm, wearing earphones.

A deafening 10-second countdown startled station staff and commuters before the concourse erupted in whoops and cheers. MP3 players and iPods emerged and the crowd danced wildly to their soundtracks in silence - for two hours.

Now for me, this is the collest part: All of these people were dancing wildly, enthusiastically, and with joyful reckless abandon to their own soundtracks through their own headphones. The articles states that "the crowd danced wildly to their soundtracks in silence."

I am thinking of this from two standpoints: the participants, who are rocking out to their personal favorite dance songs surrounded by a throng of other dancers. It must have been like being your own DJ for an enormous club scene, even though the other dancers weren't necessarily on your beat.

And from the point of view of the passers-by, who could see the dancing but not hear the music. It must have looked like a mad rush-hour crowd all going into simultaneous fits. Confused commuters must have been looking for a reason behind the crowd starting to spasm.

Search and seizures.

And how could they not refer to a flash mob dancing as as Flash Dance?! Boggles the mind. (But I suppose that is the point...)
