I am creeped out by this. But I am also bothered that I am creeped out by this. Should I be? I'm a fan of Mayim Bialik, especially on the Big Bang Theory, and that she is a neurobiologist playing a neurobiologist.
She's quite vocal about not weening children until they want to be weaned. She posted her final story, or lament rather, that she has now finally separated from her breast-feeding-bond with her child. Her son has decided he's done with the breast milk.
Her son is over four years old.
There are well-coument health benefits to breast feeding, but how long is too long? Is there such a thing as "too long." I am creeped out about this I think in the same fashion that straight people are creeped out by the die of two dudes doing it. But I can get over the "ick" factor if I think about it a little bit. Like gay sex for straight people, it's just not for me, but have at it if it's for you. Unless it results in serious attachment/independence issues for the kid.
I am just having a hard time with a four-year-old who is fully able to articulate that why yes he would like to suck on mommy's breast can do so and suckle. I think this speaks less to the dependence of the child and more to the dependence of the mother. As one friend commented, the late weaning is less creepy that the holier-than-thou, over-the-top monologue on how bonded she is with her son for the constant and prolonged "latching."
Or maybe, we've just seen too many comedic takes on this idea, as illustrated by Little Britain:
