a capital idea

The AP and the MLA style guides used to require that Internet and Web be capitalized as they were considered places names and therefore proper nouns .  So even a now-common phrase such as "available via their Web site" required a capital Web.  That has always bugged me.  I do not know if their style guides have changed now that the cyberspace vernacular has become commonplace, but I am making the decision not to do it any more.

It has been brought to my attention that the revised Chicago Manual of Style prefers "website" as a single word, lowercase. "Internet" remains capitalized.
