It's crab season!!

Rabbit season! Duck season! No—it's fresh crab season!

The crab harvest started last week and it is crab season around the San Francisco Bay. My favorite neighborhood seafood restaurant Woodhouse Fish Co. hosted a whole-crab special this week. I was so excited and managed to get in for the final night. Ever since I was a kid I have loved crab legs, despite my less-than-ninja-like skills in cracking open the crustaceans themselves. Open season makes me downright giddy.

Crab Madness

But I had never done the whole bib and full crab dining experience. You certainly have to work for your meat (word) but it is so much fun and absolutely worth the effort.

Crab season!

The crab was blissfully tender and delicious. Woodhouse has to work on their sides though—the potatoes and greens were thimble-sized and tasteless, and the garlic bread could only be cut apart by a stone mason. Otherwise, a definite quality evening of crabby goodness, with good company of not-crabby goodness.

Yay for crab season!

We have crabs!

Even if it makes us all titter at the signage like teenage boys.

We've got crabs!

Oh for fuck's sake.

Krismastime!

Sometimes you can judge the fun of the night before by the photos you find in your phone the next day.

And by the amount of damage done to an ankle.

Kris Searle dropped in this week to record some amazing new tracks. Check out his new single Veins via Soundcloud and his home page, and listen to "An Evening with Kris Searle" streaming live from the Coffee Connection this Sunday, December 5th.

how miserable is your Thanksgiving travel?

Well, if you are trying to fly home for Thanksgiving dinner, check out this beautiful and interactive Misery Map from Flight Aware, which ranks airports by number of delayed and canceled flights, by route, in real time.

From an information presentation point of view, this is beautiful.

the best thing you are not listening to

Holy audio amazeballs. One of the surprise treats on our adventure to Anderson Valley, was that our residential host is also host to a weekly radio show on the one station you can get in the valley. It's the NPR affiliate, and has some very local programming.

It's called Trading Time, and is best described as "Craig's List for the radio." Yes, it's talking classified, where people across the valley call in to sell, seek, or give stuff they have, want, or need or need to give away. Callers share their stuff/needs, and give their own phone numbers, and other listeners can connect directly if they want to.

road trip through the redwoodsIt is ridiculously entertaining. It was fortunate for us that our drive up to Mendocino coincided with the broadcast and we got to hear almost the entire show. And we were losing our shit. We loved it so much we kept the radio on and the doors open while we stopped to take photos among the redwoods.

According to Andrea, this was a mild show. I can't wait for a Saturday morning when I can sit and stream the show via the interwebs.

Best Call Ever: A guy calls in looking to buy an old refrigerator. It needs to be of [these kinds] of models, and can't be any newer than [not anytime soon]. It doesn't have to work, and broken is better as it's probably cheaper.

We in the car enjoyed discussing the call, and all agreed that he wanted to buy old refrigerators because he was a small appliance repair guy and needed it for the parts.

Oh, city folk. How oblivious are we? No sir, this man was looking for a good condition, old, possibly broken refrigerator— with"no sauna or hot tub" (which we figured out means "no bells and whistles")— because he needs to build a new possum smoker.

Second Best Call Ever: The woman who called to sell an unrelated item, but took time to attest to possums being, and these are her words, "good eatin'" and wanted the guy's number so she could call him and share recipes.

Trading Time. Stream it from KZYX.

Whatchu got?

the best thing you are not eating

Graham cracker ice cream! This is one of these things that once you encounter it, you wonder how has this not been a thing all along. It's genius. It would seem obvious, but clearly it is not. And once you've tasted it, you will push people down to get a bite of it.

At Stone and Embers, we tried their homemade graham cracker ice cream. And paired it with their homemade dark chocolate ice cream. And minds were blown.

the wrathy ones were already gone

Autumn in northern California wine country, particularly the Anderson Valley, is gorgeous. Roederer Estate harvests its grapes a little early for the precise level of sugars, acids, and flavors it likes for their champagnes (oh, "sparkling wines."). There was one row along the driveway whose vines stretched their dry and withered arms across the lattice which were still heavy with plump fruit bracing against the chill winds.

grapes left on the vine after harvest - 2

No one could answer why this particular row was unpicked at harvest time, but we liked the idea that they were left as an offering to autumn, the harvest, the birds, and the tasters.

I wouldn't call those benefits.

today's reflection on bibliophilia

Jenny: Honestly, what is it about them that bothers you so much?
Giles: The smell.
Jenny: Computers don't smell, Rupert.
Giles: I know. Smell is the most powerful trigger to the memory there is. A certain flower, or a whiff of smoke can bring up experiences long forgotten. Books smell musty and-and-and rich. The knowledge gained from a computer is a —it it has no texture, no context. It's...it's there and then it's gone. If it's to last, then the getting of knowledge should be... tangible.  It should be… smelly.

Mendocino in the cold, misty afternoon felt very Hitchcockian. Appropriately enough I suppose, as The Birds was filmed/set in the similar Bodega Bay, CA.

All day I kept thinking:

Although I suppose this more of a Murder, She Wrote kind of place.

At times I think that sitting home alone with a burrito is better than dating.

First of all: it is so much less painful than dating.

Bonus: it comes with a burrito.
