February frills

I had been so looking to laying low after the holidays, and January was, if not in weather, wonderfully chill. February is starting to heat up. But I am still eager to take a bourbon, the window seat, and the Kindle over event hopping for at least one more month.

Fog Over Frisco

The San Francisco Public Library is hosting their 2013 Summer Film Festival by showing 20 movies in 20 branches this summer, and all movies were filmed or set in San Francisco! Its a fun list, and I'm excited to finally see Fog Over Frisco, which isn't available on DVD and hard to find (Amazon sometimes has it available under the "burn on demand" DVD-R service, but that can be iffy.)

Fog Over Frisco, 1934, stars Bette Davis and has been lauded as a San Francsico thriller and often seen as a precursor to the Hitchock style.

From Wikipedia:

Arlene Bradford (Bette Davis) is a spoiled, bored, wealthy socialite who finances her extravagant lifestyle by exploiting her fiancé Spencer Carlton's (Lyle Talbot) access to her stepfather's brokerage firm and using her connection to steal security bonds for crime boss Jake Bello (Irving Pichel).

When Arlene disappears, her sister Val (Margaret Lindsay) steps in to discover what happened to her with the help of society reporter Tony Sterling (Donald Woods) andphotojournalist Izzy Wright (Hugh Herbert).

Bette Davis, anxious to portray the slatternly waitress Mildred in the RKO Radio Pictures production Of Human Bondage, accepted the relatively small role of Arlene in the hope her cooperation would convince Jack Warner to lend her to the rival studio for the film. Her ploy worked, and when Warner received word about her dynamic performance inBondage, he elevated her to top billing in Frisco.^[1]Part of the Warner Brothers release was filmed on location in San Francisco. It was remade as Spy Ship in 1942.

The SFPL will be screening Fog Over Frisco at the West Portal Branch at 6:30 next Tuesday, July 23.

The SEASON of San Franciscan events gets a warm up with Dore, but really begins with Folsom. And then we freaking sprint through New Year's. The first big weekend has passed, and if you were bored you were not paying attention.

The Friends of the San Francisco Public Library are hosting another Imbibe event at the newly renovated Richmond/Senator Milton Marks Branch, Friday, September 30, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.

This event will feature Little Creatures (a Talking Heads tribute band) and booze and bits from the Anchor Brewing/Distilling companies.

The Imbibe events always feature an interesting crowd and above-average chit chat. And if you're looking for that good opening line to speak to the hottie over in New Fiction, just ask them if they've read any good books lately.

Cowboy UP!

The Best Buck in the Bay returns to the Bay Area this weekend!  Parties on Treasure Island, and rodeo events back at Driscoll Ranch in La Honda.

One boot kicking' hell of a good time presented by the Bay Area Chapter of the Golden State Gay Rodeo Association.  Check out the website for schedule—including a variety of shuttles from the City to events.

HSB lineup announced

And there is going to be a RIDICULOUS amount of talent in Golden Gate Park the first weekend in October.  Hardly Strictly Bluegrass has announced the lineup for this year's weekend of music extravaganza.  I could camp out all day at every stage, but Sunday is reserved for dancing on Sundance Saloon's outdoor stage at the Castro Street Fair (always the first Sunday in October).

I appreciate the years when the "first weekend in October" and "the first Sunday in October" don't fall on the same dates so that these events aren't mutually exclusive.  I thought I might get another separation this year with Friday falling in September, but the HSB folks' calendar shows Saturday as the beginning of the weekend and so HSB will run 9/1-10/2.

Honestly, the lineup of artists is amazing.  But be warned that getting there is not half the fun, and be sure to stake out your squatting claim early and bring a blanket to sit on.

This Friday at the Makeout Room is a rare treat:  77 El Deora with Jeffrey Luck Lucas.

It's an early show, 7:30 to 9:30 and will start your weekend off right.  We could all use this this music to soothe our savage breasts.  The Makeout Room is at 3225 22nd Street in the Mission.

Darkly gorgeous, unexpectedly uplifting, these nine slow-moving songs traverse desolate nighttime landscapes where conversations in road-houses and at neon-lit kitchen tables drift suddenly from trivialities to life-altering truth. The coffee turns cold, the cigarettes burn down, and all of the sudden someone you love is looking you in the eye, demanding, "Tell me why / your kindest words are just shy of lies." Jeffrey Luck Lucas, a SF-based songwriter who got his start with garage-Kinks The Morlocks before earning a masters in cello composition and performance, is not one to shy away from the confrontational in this, his second solo album. Still, his voice is so gentle and mournful, his arrangements so supple and glowing that you don't see the knife right away...or perhaps, if you're unlucky, at all...

Two theatrical productions you should go see:

Tigers Be Still
at the SF Playhouse

While the productions are really hit or miss and generally landing somewhere at the 80% mark, I love the SF Playhouse for its creative use of a small stage and enthusiasm and sometimes surprising absolute excellence of the actors. Tigers Be Still starts a little slow but the actress may work on this as the run continues and start the show with more of a punch. For a one-room set, which serves nicely as an array of other settings, the action of the piece can get pretty dynamic. And the script is pretty funny by itself—but it's this quartet of actors who really make the show a fun time. I'd prefer a bit more pizzaz to the action, but they put on a great above-community-standards performance. Again, laud applause to these actors who really break the limitations of their written roles.

Side note to the SF Playhouse: Seriously? No decription of your show or decent marketing materials on your own website? There's just a PDF press release people have to download. People hate doing that and typically won't. Your website is an easy, cheap and obvious marketing opportunity. If the rest of your marketing is like this it is no wonder you are struggling to survive. It's clearly not the acting or the material (although your return to the Fantastiks was beyond wretched).

Tigers Be Still is a good date night. The SF Playhouse is on Sutter just a few doors east of Powell Street. Show runs 85 minutes with no intermission, so judge your bladder constraints and wine intake accordingly.

Foul Play Productions, whose founders are the best of the best of local theatrical talent from writers to producers, is proud to announce this new production to run July 14 through August 13. I don't know anything about this play beyond the blurbs on the web page, but knowing the talent behind Foul Play Productions, I am eager to see what creative underground angst and entertainment they have concocted.

The Exit Theater is the creative home to local theater, is just inside the seedy border of the Tenderloin, but only a block from the Powell Street Muni/BART station at 156 Eddy Street.  While the theater trends to black box, the performances here are nothing but gold.

Pride Calendar

Okay, I don't have time to put together a complete Pride-themed What's Going On this week, but I imagine anyone reading this (1) has no plans and are better off reading any of the many guides to Pride out there and they should check Gloss, the Bay Times or the Bay Area Reporter depending on their tastes, or (2) dude, you already live here, have a life, and already have all of your Pride plans made.  Or your straight and have completely unrelated plans.  Perhaps you would like to paint my bathroom.

I have always loved Pink Saturday (Pride tag), but the non-community element has fucked that up just like they did Halloween.  Being gay is so popular we can't even have our own block parties anymore, but we also can't get equal protection under the law.  Yay rah.  So while Pink Saturday is trying to fly under the radar, the no open booze rule will be strictly enforced, and the crowds are expected to be massive, which to me is the opposite of what Pink Saturday is about—the community coming together.  I'll either stay at a friend's Castro home Pink Saturday party, or head to the Hotel Witcomb for the Sundance Saloon Country Pride dance party.  Actually, considering my "save like Jesus" plan, I should not pay for any parties this weekend,  And save the jankle for dancing outside all day Sunday if I can.

So, while clearly not an exhaustive list, here are my Pride plans in case you are looking for fun ideas:

• Farewell party to the gorgeous in body and soul and San Franciscan nightlife nearly naked hottie regular Julian at the Powerhouse.

• The Anita Cocktail Hour at the Rrazz Room (It promises to be a great show, but I have decided to save the cash, even though there are half price tickets at Goldstar!  Go!)

• Pink Saturday party in the Castro for the queers.  Non-queers please go to the Marina or the Mission or something.  If you have to take BART or a bridge to get here, don't.

Sunday PRIDE
I'll be working the boot check at the Sundance stage 1:30-3:00 pm.  Dancing afterwards, then crashing.  There are a slew of Pride night parties.  Pick one.  I'm taking a hot shower and getting take out.  Or making out with you.

Nota Bene for Pride attendees:  If you have a membership to the DeYoung/Legion of Honor/Asian Art Museums, bring your membership card for access to free bag check and nice clean, air conditioned bathrooms at the Asian Art Museum which is the eastern border building of the Civic Center/United Nations Plaza/Pride Celebration.

black tie and Tales

Both the sun and my sinus are emerging from their wet fog just in time for the opening night gala for Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City: A New Musical tonight at the American Conservatory Theater.

We got our gala tickets over the weekend, with pretty awesome front row balcony seats (I imagine the seating selection was complicated for their development officers—Kevin and I are big ACT supporters, but with enthusiasm more than enormous donations.  I think that translates to balcony not orchestra, but the best we can get up there.)

Instructions with the gala tickets encouraged us to put our own Tales of the City spin on black tie.  I intended to tie dye a tux shirt light blue and paint the Golden Gate Bridge across the front of it, and perhaps cable car studs.  After various consultations I am toning it down just a touch with just the blue tie-dyed tux shirt, no Golden Gate Bridge, but floral studs and cuff links.  I was reminded that while Tales of the City is very much an extended love letter to San Francisco, and perhaps is the best if not only narrative to truly capture the soul of this place at that time.  And while one might think visually that SF = Golden Gate Bridge, the GGB actually has zero to do with Tales.  I don't recall characters even crossing the thing.

However, 70s and tie-dye and flower power are aplenty, and so I go.  Pics, for sure, tomorrow.  Kevin is wearing his western tuxedo, which may not be thematically appropriate but is certainly quite handsome and  a twist with personality.

Oh yeah, it's June already.  Pride months and SF Summer in full swing.  I'll be spending about half of it back in Nashville hanging out with Dad and the family, but I could stand a week or two off of the rolling SF bandwagon (which you just know runs on a mixture of beats and glitter).

Wednesday night, Anna Conda is proposing a leather takeover of the Skylark bar (16th & Valencia) as they have taken over the Eagle's liquor license and word is that ownership won't let the Eagle continue operations and won't allow transfer of the lease to others who would keep the Eagle going. It appears that if a straight Mission d'bags is willing to cary out a hostile takeover a SoMa gay space, the leather queens are happy to descend on the Mission instead.

I am the call-a-gay for some certain friends, so here's the answers you've been looking for.  Yes, Britney will be playing a Good Morning America concert one morning this month in the streets of San Francisco.  The show will be in front of the Castro Theater on Sunday, March 27, and the concert is scheduled to start at noon and run for an hour.  The show will air on GMA on following Tuesday morning (March 29).  Apparently, Britney is now stronger than yesterday, she's so lucky, she's a star, toxic, wants to do it again, and all manner of terrible lyric tie-ins.

Heklina has already weighed in for the SFist, saying that this is a calculated move to try to get back her gays.  I do hope some of our freakier flags fly on Sunday—I could use some good drag cameos and a hoard of little Chris Crocker clones running around.  I should ask Pollo for a comment.

Personally, I think the Castro would get packed for a show from our favorite Cherrio, Brittany S. Pearce.

This week in Fun February

Friday night (tonight):  The monthly Lick It! (What do you have a taste for?) fundraiser at the Powerhouse hosted by IML (runner up) and super nice guy Lance Holman.

Saturday Feb 12: Fundraiser for the Bay Area Chapter of the GSGRA (the Gay Rodeo), ridiculously awesome drag show, and Empress election rally for Saybeline at the Lookout! 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Sunday Feb 13:  Sweethearts' Ball and Underwear Party at Sundance Saloon (hot dancing in your skivvies!), the GlamaZone at the Cafe hosted by Pollo Del Mar, and the usual furry fun-ness late night at 440.

Monday Feb 14:  Valentine's Day options abound in the City, from Lovers Lane to the Bitter Ball.  If you don't have plans by now,  I can't help you.  If you are feeling lonely, toss back a couple of shots and join any one of the hundred underwear parties across the City for any and all orientations.  Ben and I got tickets for a Victor/Victoria Valentine with the incomparable Leslie Ann Warren (hosted by Coco Peru) at the Castro Theater and I pee myself just a little every time I think about it.  Sold out.

Tuesday Feb 15:  Fanboy Night at the Lone Star.  This time: Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog.

Wednesday Feb 16: Beat the Gong talent show/competition at Trigger.  Benefits the Bay Area Gay Rodeo.  6:00 p.m.

Thursday Feb 17:  Sundance Saloon, the SF Bluegrass and Old Time Festival at Cafe Du Nord, and the 1984 dance party has officially moved to Mighty with like totally awesome reviews.

Friday Feb 18:  Mr. Powerhouse Leather 2011 competition, Trannyshack's Stevie Nicks Tribute Night at DNA Lounge, Paw at Deco (that's next week), and the (final) International Bear Rendez-Vous kicks into high gear.  Go Grizzlies!
