Steeplechase 2013

Another fun weekend in Nashville, and another fabulous Iroquois. I'm about to wrote up my blurbs for Nfocus, although it's getting harder and harder to come up with something new to say. It's begining to be old hat, as it were.

I will say this about the 72nd Iroquois: fashion-wise the infield has become better dressed than the boxes, and seersucker has been out-raced by gingham. Or as I call it, Gingham Style. (see also)

Rather than wax with words, here are some pictures worth their thousands.

Nfocus blurbs will be posted six months after publication.

Also, huge love to Van and David for hosting the charming evening with Steve and Allen.

Update: Oh yeah, there was a super trashy catfight in the infield. No surprise it's on YouTube. And blogs. Fun times. Ladies, if you're going to get hammered and tend to violent behavior, put on some panties.

Steeplechase Weekend 2012

Man, I was gone for about three weeks out of five this summer, and never got around to posting much of any it. Fun times almost always happen away from a computer. So before the summer is over, here is the Steeplechase 2012 recap—

Having had such fun with Lance and Margaret last year, I invited them to join me in Mom's box again this year. We wanted to fill the box with fun people as this was also the first Steeplechase without Dad. Mom had her good friends Patsy and Bob, and Peggy from across the street. Brother Jay rounded out the set. Just the day before Jay had flown to DFW where Bradley was finishing exams, so he could drive the 15 hours back with Bradley—straight through—so Brad could be back in time to go the Steeplechase with his friends. We are those kind of Steeplechasers.

It was a really fun week in Nashville with some good quality time with the family as well as friends. While looking for a new gig in the art world, Lance is managing some of the Mynt restaurants, including Suzy Wong's House of Yum. I got some action shots. And some good visit time with my Nashville Gays.

It was also Tribe's 10th birthday party, with all sorts of festivities, including a show by New York's Queen of Green, Hedda Lettuce.

Leland "graduated" from his pre-school at Vandy where his mother works, and this is the only class he's ever known, so their year end picnic and sing was bittersweet. And expectedly adorable. Plus, I got some great pics of Franna and Leland sharing a moment.

Adding to the cuteness factor of the weekend was Ellen's 17th birthday dinner, which was slightly overshadowed by the three rescue beagle puppies in residence. It was like someone melted cuddly in a spoon, heated it, and put it in a puppy-shaped syringe.

Once the puppies were pooped, we embraced the cliché,

Letting sleeping dogs lie

...and let them lie.

Ellen, ever musical, had a variety of new instruments on her birthday wish list, including a tambourine. Having enough Nashville musical friends, I knew to go to Fork's for anything percussion, and found out there is a whole lot I didn't know about tambourines. That is to say there is a lot to know and I knew zip. There's open, half moon open, closed-closed with skin and closed with synthetic, and three types of jingles and three types of jingle material, each with their own range and resonance. Who knew? I got her a "basic" one, and a gift certificate so she could come back and explore, educate, and get another one to suit her sound. She was impressed that I knew about Fork's. Now that she is of a mature age, I may need to set her up with my creative friends from my 20s. That might blow her mind a little.

Then again, she has recorded in Ben Folds studio and played with the youngest of Hank Williams Jr's kids among other next generations, so she has her own level of cred.

Steeplechase race day itself was eagerly anticipated and I woke up around seven in the morning...to stare in the mirror and projectile vomit. I chalked it up to food poisoning and was determined to make it through the day. I couldn't look at saltine and had all the strength of wet toilet paper. But I looked good. I rallied as best I could for the rainy day, and Lance and Marg were total troopers. My energy would come and go, and at one point I had to go to the car and pass out for about an hour. After that, much was righter with the world. As I tried to be amiable and visit with all the people I had come so far to see, I kept hearing over and over, "Oh, so-and-so cant be here because he or she is at home throwing up." Apparently we all caught the same 24-hour stomach bug, and I hoped I hadn't spread it further around the races.

It did zap most of my energy and I was not the usual Race Day Dan that I enjoy. I was also supposed to write about race food for Nfocus but I couldn't look at a platter without getting dizzy and I had to ultimately bail and go home.

But damn if I didn't make a showing of it at least. I do love Steeplechase, even in the rain. I am very much my mother's child in this respect. And I love that even in a raincoat my mom looks fabulous.

Always at treat at the races is the Murray box right behind us, hosted by Carter Murray Dawson and her husband Chris.

That is not Chris in the photo, but one of their friends who come up every year from New Orleans with his wife and spends hours the night before crafting what they call the perfect Bloody Mary. They are not wrong.

You may remember Carter from one of my all time favorite Steeplechase pics: "Must be present to win."

Must be present to win.

That started in 2005, and has led to some good follow up photos. Including this one from 2010 in which the singles in the box bets have matured into 20s:

Must Be Present to Win, 2010

This year she showed me how they themselves have matured, and now bring a "proper bet bag" in which to keep the pot in lieu of her cleavage.

Carter matures to the money bag

Which frankly, I don't care how gay I am, is a little disappointing.

Another delight was running into my Swan Ball Belle from last year who was also in town for the races.

Wilson and Shelby at the races

Despite being nearly comatose and dizzy most of the day, it was still a good race day, as is any day spent with Fran, Jay, Margaret and Lance. Super happy fun time with a side of fainting.

Steeplechase 2011

Hey race goers! I'm off to Nashville again tomorrow, and now that the Steeplechase Nfocus issue is out I thought I'd go ahead and post a few comments before I head back.

Steeplechase was wet and cold this year, but as that also meant it was only the die-hard race crowd there, it was an intense amount of fun. Damp yes, dampened spirits, no. Actually, come to think about it, that could have been the title of my column as this year's piece focused on what people were drinking. That also sounds like a good album name, "Cocktails in the Rain: Dampened Spirits."

With the cold and the rain the cicadas were not the problem I anticipated them to be, although their molted shells were still rather omnipresent.

I was excited to see awesome Aussie photog Simon James again, and he tweaked my camera for better photos in the rainlight (I asked Santa for the same point-and-shoot that he uses, which is a bit above my competency), only later to lunch for it as it was being dropped by someone taking my picture and I spilled a greyhound into the open mechanisms. Yipes.

However, I did get several shots which I rather adore and am considering blowing up into poster prints.

My favorite of which is this one, as the people in it are so much fun, and I really like the composition, separation of three, descending sizes, and the horse running by.

Special shouts to Margaret McAllister, Amy Hornsby and Lance Arnold for joining me in my parents' box and being such fun party people whose spirits, in soul or Solo, could not be damped by the weather. Here's the full Flickr set.

I haven't seen the Nfocus spread yet, but I do hope they included these race drink recipes I put together for the piece. Enjoy!

Steeplechase will be all the buzz!

I leave at the crack tomorrow for another week of quality time with the family, and another hopefully fab Iroquois Steeplechase.  However, Alert Reader and Pseudo Sister Margaret sent me the following alert last week:  It's year 13 of the 13-year cicada cycle.  And they are due to peak on race day.

Cicadas in the Apple TreeHoleeee.  If you've never experienced a cicada cycle, it's a B-movie terror.  While I generally find them more annoying than terrifying, the level of swam and noise and non-lethal attacks could send someone unfamiliar with the experience into a mad panic.  Cicadas are about two-inch long flying armored insects that emerge from ground every so many years to molt, mate, and return to the earth.  Seriously.  B-movie stuff.  And they are unbelievably loud.  The noise they make is their mating call.  And they're competitive.  They swarm lawn mowers and other machinery of similar sound/decibel level.  And their users.  They've been known to "attack"  (meh, "swam in small numbers around and possibly land on or nibble") passers by, particularly women with hair big enough to get caught in (this is, remember Tennessee) or early-teen girls.  Which was hilarious the first cicada cycle in my memory, which was in 1985 and I was in 8th grade.  Cicadas were handy tools for pestering girls, and boys would fight with them, or use the eating of one as high-stakes dare currency.

But these things are nasty.  And omnipresent.  And leave their crunchy shells—remember they are molting—everywhere.  And Dear God, you think the Grinch had it with all of the Who's noise, noise, noise, noise!    It's like the summer air is heavy with humidity and a deafening radio static.

I have yet to come up with an angle for my Nfocus Steeplechase stories this year.  I considered writing a fictional B-movie script based on events of the day, but the artists at the Anderson Group may have beat me to that punchline.

Summer lovin', had me a blast

May 2010 was a ridiculously good time.  As some of you may recall, I took Shilpa and PeeDee home to Nashville for the races (the Iroquois Steeplechase), and stayed a few weeks for quality time with the family and then wrapped up the vacation with the Swan Ball.  As usual, every moment was accounted for, so while there was much to blog about there was no protected time for doing so.  I could barely find half an hour to crank out my race articles for Nfocus, which I did at Fido's after dropping the kids off at BNA (or rather, parted ways at Prince's Hot Chicken).

I never got around to backblogging, but the 1,200 or so photos from the weekend certainly tell a story (a thousand pictures is worth how many words?).  I have finally gotten around to posting the Nfocus articles from May and June though, so here they are.  Rereading/formatting these made the cold little studio feel a little like summer again.

Iroquois Weekend has been amazing

Blog posting will resume when I get some free time to edit all the photos and get some of these stories down. Short version: it's been an absolutely amazing weekend. Flood recovery notwithstanding.

But the weather has been perfect, as has the company.

I'll probably start blogging again after Shilpa and Paul leave, although that's sure to be depressing so I'll need a recovery period to bring the funny. And I have Nfocus snark to get out quick.
