In response to the Iowa ruling, there is a new national ad campaign against same-sex marriage, claiming that allowing civil same-sex marriage forces doctors to act against against their will and churches to be punished by the government for not performing same-sex marriage, and that allowing gays equal marriage civil rights will force straights to change how they live.
Of course, none of this is true, and the ad reads, in the small print, "inspired by true stories." What? The line, which is not read by a doctor, "I'm a doctor having to decide between my job and my moral values..." WTF. Since when do doctors perform civil marriages? Or is she upset that she had to let a same-sex spouse visit a dying partner. Oh yes, what a moral outrage.
Do do they mean that doctors have been held accountable for discriminating practices, like refusing to treat women who are lesbians? The same way they are held accountable for refusing to treat black women, just because they are black. If their "morals" mean they can't abide by the professional code ethics, then the governing body as can rightly prohibit them from becoming licensed professionals.
And same-sex civil marriage explicitly has NO effect or rules pertaining to religion or religious practices. When religious institutions operate as corporate entities, they are, however, held to the same laws as all other corporate institutions. (I.e., in states where gays and lesbians are covered as other protected minorities from employment discrimination, the Baptist Home for the Burn Recovery (fictional) may not fire the janitor merely because he's gay. Granting same-gender couples access to marriage contracts does not change that, nor does it require the Baptist church to perform or bless same-sex unions. Their corporate health policy however, will—as with interracial couples, which they also opposed.)
The lies have got to stop. I am ready for a major player to call them out on their shit. Like Governors and the President.
They don't have to come out in favor of equality in civil marriage, but they should come out in favor of honesty and integrity.
And SHAME on any station that airs these lies, as everyone knows they are lies.
Ugh.
Update: The audition tapes from the actors has leaked, and apparently they are craptastic. They have to try really, rally hard to make it look like gay marriage will hurt them. So full of it. Not only is the ad full of lies they come from the mouths of fakers.
Further Update: Gays + YouTube = The Awesome.
I see your Hatred, Bigotry, Lies, and Fear-Mongering, and raze you with Humor, Satire, and Joy.
