Last week, (two weeks ago? time flies), I was lucky to get a call from Davidson '93 buddy Chappell Wescoat Barber who managed to get Davidson Vs. Saint Mary's basketball tickets via the college lottery, and they had an extra ticket! I carpooled over with Chappell and Tersh (and Chappell's dad) out to Moraga for the game. I fully expected Davidson to wipe the floor with them.
When I arrived at the Barbers' Tersh looked at me surprised and asked, "No face paint?" Tersh has been following the blog and the Facebook updates, which clearly show a tendency. How freaking gay am I? The ONE TIME that face paint would have been both butch and totally situationally appropriate, and it didn't even occur to me. Granted, I had five minutes after work to change clothes, pack a roadie, and rush over—but still. I had to laugh.
I will say for a small college on the opposite coast, Davidson had a GREAT showing of fans! Saint Mary's colors are also red (and blue) so the red Davidson fans sort of blended with the Saint Mary's fans. But we did good. And I recognized some familiar and fun folks from last year.
Two things I was not prepared for:
(1) Chappell and I both looked stunned when we discovered there was no bar/beer. Our first reaction was WTF?! But then remembered we were at a college game full of underage students.
(2) The overabundance of frat boy man candy. This too should have occurred to me sooner but the super A&F, farm boy, catholic school, humpy boys were both an added bonus and a distraction. I felt both arduous and completely pervy—just on the better side of NAMBLA.
The Davidson crowd was great—enthusiastic and vocal! I got e-mails from far flung friends telling me they could hear us chanting on ESPN.
And I have to give props to the Saint Mary's students too. They were out in force, and completely over the meter in their enthusiasm for their school.

Another treat was joining fellow '93 alum Sara Carlson Tavernese and her husband—love from first sight freshman year—Peter Tavernese '92. (And shout to Adriana Tavernese, '93.)

Go Cats go!
Unfortunately, Davidson just wasn't making their shots. We scored the first points and struggled from there. The final 45 seconds lasted almost half an hour as Davidson's strategy seemed to be to foul as much as possible to stop the clock, allow the free thow, and then get possession and a chance to score three.
The attempt was unsuccessful. But MAN what an exciting game! Each team close on the other's heels the entire time.
From the report:
Still, all things considered, an amazing game. Big thanks to Chappell and Tersh! The ‘Cats whittled a 13-point Saint Mary’s lead down to seven following a Brendan McKillop 3-pointer with 2:07 to go. Davidson got a defensive stop, and McKillop drew a foul going to the basket. The sophomore missed both free throws, but Davidson got the rebound. Carlin Hughes stole a pass intended for Curry spotted up from 3-point range on the wing, and the ‘Cats would get no closer. The Gaels went 5-of-6 from the free-throw line inside the last 46 seconds to seal the win.
