iPhone 3G/2.0 drops hard

Well, the DotMac conversion to MobileMe was pretty much a complete failure.  The service is not a failure, just the transition process.  It was supposed to take a couple of hours overnight and be seamless to existing subscribers.  It took over 24 hours, during which vital services, paid services no less, were unavailable.

Users are already disgruntled for paying $100 for service compatibility for services that other parties (Google, Yahoo, etc) provide for free.  But many DotMac customers rely on these services for their business and livelihood and pay for the support and reliability.

Over the last two days, Apple provided neither.

The reaction on Apple discussion boards has been, to put it lightly, pissed.

MobileMe had to be in place in time for the new iPhones to work, and those went on sale this morning at 8:00.

By all radio, TV, and web accounts, the release of the new iPhone can best be described as a complete clusterfuck.  Last report was over two blocks and and an estimated 1,200 people in line at the Apple store downtown.  Someone I talked to last night planned to be in line by 6:00 this morning if not earlier.

Existing iPhone owners could download the new iPhone 2.0 update this morning.  Reports say that service is overwhelmed and is now the online clusterfuck equivalent to activating a new one.

As much as I want the new iPhone, I may not be ready to dive into that pool yet.  I fear the experience will be like diving into a pool without water yet.
